Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way’s kooky superhero comics will return to production next month, hopefully in time for a release date later this year. In the meantime, The Umbrella Academy has finally confirmed the new stars who’ll be facing off against the Hargreeves in season three.
The third season of Netflix’s breakout comic book hit The Umbrella Academy has added five new stars – and a floating cube – to the cast.
Netflix confirmed the cast updates today, January 11, and revealed season three is aiming to start production in Toronto this February.
At the end of last year’s follow-up instalment, Vanya Hargreeves (played by Elliot Page) and the rest of the team returned to a different timeline to discover their mansion had been taken over by a mysterious new group.
Just like the titular team of troubled heroes, The Sparrow Academy have all been designated their own numbers by their sadistic mentor, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
Joining the cast this season are Britne Olford (Hunters) as Fei/Number 3, Jake Epstein (Suits) as Alphonso/Number 4, Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane/Number 5 and Cazzie David as Jayme/Number 6.
Fei is being touted as the smartest member of the dark new team, whilst the battle-scarred Alphonso is sure to be a match for knife-wielding brawler, Diego (David Castañeda).
Writer and creator of the comedy series Eighty-Sixed Cazzie David’s character Jayme is described as strong and silent.
Another upcoming star, David is taking on her first major acting role since the publication of her best-selling memoir, No One Asked For This.
Also rounding up the Sparrows is Christopher, by far the strangest member of the alternate Hargreeves Academy.
No actor is listed for Christopher, a sentient floating cube, though Netflix described the character as an ‘existential dread inducing psykronium cube’.
It’s also unknown whether Christopher will be portrayed by a voice actor, or if his psychological powers indicate he’ll be communicating with the team telepathically.
In contrast to the rest of the Hargreeves’ miraculous conceptions, the ominous floating cube is confirmed to be of unknown origins.
As well as his telekinetic powers, he is also able to turn rooms freezing cold, induce crippling dread and share precognitive visions with his teammates.
The Umbrella Academy’s creepy new villains will also be joined by returning cast Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman and Aidan Gallagher.
Meanwhile, the story will also continue off-screen with comic book creator Gerard Way eventually set to release a fourth instalment of the original series.
The Umbrella Academy is available to stream on Netflix.
