Elly (played by Jodi Anasta) has had quite a rough ordeal on Neighbours over the past few months, having been incarcerated for the murder of villain Finn Kelly (Rob Mills), finally getting justice and falling back in love with her daughter’s father, Shaun Watkins (Brad Moller). All the way through this and over the past few years, the mother-of-one has always had the support of her young sister, Bea Nilsson (Bonnie Anderson). Although the siblings haven’t always seen eye-to-eye, their mutual and troubled upbringings have made them stronger women as a result, with their hardships making their own relationship more concrete. However, as the beloved character makes her exit from the Channel 5 soap in upcoming scenes, it is her sister who is hit hardest by the news.
After believing Shaun had died in an avalanche accident last year, Elly was truly shocked to see him standing before her following her release from jail.
Although she had fallen under his brother Finn’s spell during his time away from Ramsay Street, the young mother instantly felt a connection with her former lover.
This was reciprocated by the father-of-one and as a result, he told Bea’s sister he was going to move to Ramsay Street permanently to be with her and their daughter, Aster.
However, upcoming scenes will make him see how distressing being in Erinsborough is for the beloved character and he offers her a proposition.
Asking his partner to leave her family and join him in Switzerland, the villain’s brother is over the moon when she accepts, but it means she has to leave her loved ones behind.
Revealing all to her sister, Elly gets the support she needs from Bea, who secretly hides how heartbroken she is from seeing her sibling leave her.
When the departure day arrives, the mother-of-one bids farewell to the people who have been parental figures to her for the past four years; Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodborne) and her husband Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher).
The farewells are emotional, but when it comes to saying goodbye to her sister, the beloved character can see the struggle in the young mechanic’s eyes.
In her heart of hearts, the latter knows this is what her sibling needs and it’s not long before Elly is driving away to start her new life.
Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk earlier this year, Jodi teased how heartbreaking her character’s exit would be.
The soap star said: “What I’ve read online is that people have already made up their mind about Elly’s departure.
“And that’s wrong. It’s unpredictable what’s going to unfold over the next few months. It’s exciting.
“For me, it’s the most fabulous exit storyline I could ever ask for. You kind of start going in one direction with this storyline, and then it takes a turn.”
No one could have anticipated Shaun’s return from the dead, with his comeback sparking the notion he would have something to do with Elly’s exit.
As episodes were rationed in the UK at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there is a slight delay from the scenes which have aired in Australia.
Therefore, the beloved character has already made her departure overseas, but fans have been bewildered by the fact she is still appearing in the opening credits.
Taking to Twitter, one fan posted: “Why is Elly still in the opening credits? Usually, they are gone the next day #neighbours.”
